ActSHEN Policy overview UU/SLU

Lots of things happening at the moment at both UU and SLU on policy. Both revision of overarching goals and strategy documents (UU) and more specific environmental/sustainability oriented policy.
I see this project and what we come up to as possible to feed into these processes..
Also in terms of practices/examples – quite a lot. CEMUS is obviously one that I know best. Many more, some of them you will meet during the two days in Uppsala
Uppsala University
Goals and strategies from 2008 under review and done in june 2014. Several goals already in place that are very in sync with goals of action (univ for a better world, internationalization, active student participation etc..).
Considering current univ. management, their rhetoric and identified focus areas in educational quality improvement (active student participation, internationalization, IT learning, self-evaluation, research education connection and transboundary education) à lots of potential right now!
Sustainability policy
ESD recommendations and overview back in 2006. CEMUS was a part of this report. But not that much has happened…No or very limited implementation.
Environmental management inventory done in 2011.
Environmental plan currently being put into place. CSD Uppsala gave a referral-response that basically said that UU should include ESD into the plan and make it much more ambitious.
Result: No answer yet, but 60 new environmental deputies at each department installed recently. Not so much on education and research but could be perhaps engaged in some way.
Decision was made to separate environmental management policy and sustainability (more education and research focused). There will be a sustainability policy document completed from now and up until end of 2014. A number of people directly or indirectly connected to CEMUS/CSD Uppsala are part of the working group that will come up with the sustainability policy document and action plan àLots of opportunity to influence.
Swedish Agricultural University (SLU)
Goals document includes very little mention of working towards a more sust. Future.
Only one:
to strengthen Sweden’s position as a knowledge nation and contribute to the development of the sustainable use and management of natural resources
..and also these key- terms: lifelong learning, needs of society
At the same time the purpose of the university is stated as follows on the website:
SLU is a university with a very important purpose: to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve global sustainable development. At SLU, we engage students in some of the most important issues facing the 21st century, such as global warming, the food crisis, and our dependence on non-renewable energy. Students are encouraged to face these challenges head-on and create a greener, cleaner and more sustainable world.
And in the Strategies document 2013-2016:
SLU is expected to contribute to the solutions of several of the global challenges, e.g. urbanisation, food secutity, zoonoses and climate change, mainly within these two priority areas:
Environmental goals are currently under revision with 4 main areas that have been identified: Energy, transport, purchases and core activities (education, research, outreach).
Currently the environmental goals state:
Objectives for ongoing environmental analysis
SLU objectives for ongoing environmental analysis are that
· there be a strong link between ongoing environmental analysis and other operational sectors at SLU
· operations take the lead in Europe and actively contribute to international development of science-based environmental analysis,
· analyses be provided for decision-making purposes that allow resource use and environmental consequences to be weighed against each other.
Which is interesting to compare and contrast with the following: Objectives for the university administration
SLU objectives for the support of core operations are that
· core operations be supplied with good levels of service
· costs be minimized for support activities within agreed-upon service levels,
· SLU’s exercise of authority will be quality assured and efficient
